- Subj: The GUUCP Flag
- ---------[UFGATE ]-----------------------------------------------
- Lots of folks have speculated and debated over what the GUUCP flag is supposed
- to mean (yes, I have read ALL of it). I'd like to thank you all. Some of
- you have presented some very GOOD ideas as to how it may be modified in the
- FUTURE (I'll need to discuss modifications with the higher *C structure before
- implementing any such modifications).
-
- Here is what the GUUCP flag is intended to mean:
-
- The GUUCP flag is intended to be a flag (there are no 'programs' which use it
- at the moment that I am aware of, so it's a "human-readable" flag) to help
- someone locate the *nearest* gateway which *WILL* gate traffic *TO* the
- Internet.
-
- Traffic coming in the Internet => FidoNet direction is governed by the DNS as
- to which gateway such traffic will be sent (this is something we cannot
- change).
-
- Therefore, to be eligible to fly the GUUCP flag, a site *MUST* be configured
- to pass *ANY* traffic in the FidoNet => Internet direction regardless of where
- it is from. Your site *MUST* also be configured so that addresses go out as
- part of the .fidonet.org domain (sites gating thru some other domain are
- therefore *NOT* eligible. The reason is simply that we, as domain
- administrators, must have some control over the return-path of such mail).
-
- UFGATE's MailOut already does this by default. If you use this, then you
- *are* eligible. If you are using FredGate, then you must have the proper
- statements configured to allow mail to go out from any Node. Sites which
- operate in a "MyNet-Only" or "by arrangement" mode are *NOT* eligible. It is
- the responsibility of the gateway operator of such restricted sites to
- advertise their services to the Nets involved on a local level.
-
- (If anyone happens to be maintaining an FAQ file somewhere, please trap and
- include this info.)
-
- Within the next couple of weeks, here's what will happen ...
-
- 1) I will generate mail targeted for all of the gateways and destined to a
- specific mailbox (so my already cluttered mailboxes don't get worse). This
- will be done at least one week from today in case some of you want to change
- your configuration based on the above.
-
- 2) For those which fail to get thru, I will contact the SysOp by both
- FidoNet NetMail *and* UUCP mail (to make sure the NetMail routing isn't broken
- somewhere along the line).
-
- 3) After any further correspondence generated by step #2, I will update the
- list of gateways eligible for the GUUCP flag and will pass it along to all of
- the RC's and NC's involved.
-
-
- If, under the above, you are *NOT* eligible for the GUUCP flag and wish to
- remain operating on a restricted basis, you may want to notify your ahead of
- time to have the GUUCP flag removed from your Node listing.
-
-
- (Disclaimer: Anyone who wants to debate the issue may do so HERE. I do *not*
- wish to see anything regarding this subject in my mailboxes except for any
- correspondence initiated by step #2 above.)
